Mount Milligan’s Collaborative Reclamation Strategy with Indigenous Communities
Centerra works in partnership with Indigenous peoples to ensure effective representation and input from Indigenous groups in our mining activities and closure objectives. The Mount Milligan Mine has collaborated with Indigenous groups and experts to create a community-focused blueprint for reclamation, influencing the closure plan for the mine. The initiative is aimed at integrating Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) into mine planning through community-wide surveys, workshops and interviews to ensure local perspectives are integrated into closure planning.
Our engagement with Indigenous communities played a pivotal role in shaping the community-led blueprint integrating TEK into the mine planning process. In fall 2023, the Mount Milligan Mine hosted a seed collection and cleaning workshop, attended by local Indigenous communities, emphasizing the importance of native seedlings. This event not only contributed practically to reclamation efforts but also fostered community engagement and the exchange of knowledge.
