In 2019 Mount Milligan launched a Mining Experience (MiningX) pilot program for local high school students.
The program focused on mining awareness and building relevant skills. Following the mining education component, participants received a bursary up to $8,000 CAD for post-secondary education.
Students undertook eight mining-related training modules, which covered topics such as Mining 101 (including a site visit to Mount Milligan), Career Exploration and Job Preparedness, Fire Safety, Occupational First Aid Level 1, Bear Aware, Environmental Monitoring, and Mental Health and Awareness.
Over the course of the 2019-2020 school year (from September to June), six grade 12 students from two of the mine’s local communities participated in MiningX.
Consideration was made when developing the program to provide students with tangible and meaningful skills that are transferable to other industries, as well as ongoing opportunities for engagement with Mount Milligan employees.
*Due to COVID-19, Mount Milligan was not able to provide summer work terms to the participants as originally planned. Instead, each participating student received a bursary of up to $8,000 CAD for post-secondary education.
